The Process of Marine Inspections

You can save time and additional expense by having the vessel accessible and prepared for the inspection. It should be clean, and you should have all paperwork and miscellaneous gear available. If applicable, you might need to make arrangements with the marina to haul the vessel for bottom inspection, and have a captain available for a sea trial. If possible, please remove personal items.

Lockers and cabin areas of the boat should be cleared prior to the arrival of the surveyor. The marine surveyor may request minor dismantling of interior ceilings, headliners, and flooring in order to gain access to certain areas. The dismantling and re-installation of the parts should be done by a qualified professional familiar with the type of boat you own and is the responsibility of the person who orders the survey.

Written authorization from the owner of the vessel might be needed to board and/or remove any part of the vessel. Once retained, a surveyor works only for you and reports to no one else. Remember, the surveyor works only for you, the purchaser of the boat, and reports to no one else. We are there to protect your interest.

A&L MARINE SURVEYORS, LLC. has a three-step process involving the marine survey itself. First is the inspection of the boat itself. The inspection process involves a very detailed and thorough inspection of both the interior and exterior of the vessel. Exterior components of the vessel are inspected for external condition without the removal of external parts and compliance with regulations. A FLIR INFRARED THERMAL IMAGING Scan is conducted on the hull superstructure, deck, and hull to look for any anomalies that may cause problems, or the excess amount of moisture that may cause problems (a moisture meter does not have the accuracy, and a painted bottom will show the bottom in 90% of the time as wet, and will only indicate spot testing, same with a phenolic hammer). Any cosmetic conditions are also noted. We can do complete engine surveys, which is a separate charge. We use up-to-date state of the art computer diagnostic specifically designed for each engine. In addition, a complete set of diagnostic oil samples which will be sent to a professional laboratory to do a complete scientific testing of oil and may have broken down particles of wear metals internally and it may show additional wear in the engines. And please, an oil sample is less than 5% of an engine inspection.

Third, a report is then written giving a detailed summary of the findings including vessel basic specifications is listed. Comments and recommendations are made in relationship to the findings. Descriptions of structural findings and equipment are listed and then an assessment of market value, replacement value, overall condition, insurability, and value (if needed).
